Step-by-Step Guide to Compress a Video with HandBrake

1. Download and Install HandBrake

  • Go to the official website: https://handbrake.fr

  • Download the version suitable for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

  • Install and launch the application.


2. Open the Source Video

  • Click on “File” to open a single video file.

  • Browse and select the video you want to encode.



3. Choose the Destination

  • Under the “Save As” section, click Browse to select the destination folder.

  • Give your output file a name and choose a location to save it.



4. Select a Preset

  • On the right-hand side, choose a preset based on your needs. Common presets:

    • Fast 1080p30 – good quality and speed for general use.


5. Configure Video Settings

  • Go to the “Video” tab:

    • Framerate (FPS): Keep Average Bitrate : 1200 kbps

6. Adjust Audio Settings

  • Go to the “Audio” tab:

    • Ensure the correct track is selected.

    • Choose AAC codec, 128 for decent quality.


7. Add Subtitles (Optional)

  • Go to the “Subtitles” tab.

  • Click Add Track if you want to embed subtitle files (like .srt).


8. Start Encoding

  • Click on the “Start Encode” button at the top of the window.


9. Check the Output

  • Once encoding is complete, go to the output folder you selected.

  • Play the video to verify that the encoding was successful.
